Kanawha County is situated in the west part of the state, and contains 2,000 square miles. Is is watered by Kanawha River and its tributaries, Elk River and Coal River, and various creeks. It contains coal in abundance, and valuable salt springs.
Capital, Charleston.
There were in 1840, neat cattle 5,690, sheep 3,810, swine 7,944; wheat 14,539 bushels produced, Indian corn 203,075, oats 22,657, potatoes 7,686, sugar 7,490 pounds, salt 1,000,000 bushels, bituminous coal 6,325,000; 29 stores with a capital of $117,000; 2 flouring mills, 13 grist mills, 27 saw mills, 9 oil mills. Capital in manufactures, $49,600.
19 schools with 408 scholars.
Population: whites 10,910, slaves 2,560, free colored 97; total, 13,567.
